This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of medicalshampoo containing terbinafine hydrochloride andchlorhexidine gluconate in dogs with dermatophytos iscomplicated with bacterial infection. Although several studiesin dogs and cats with fungal dermatitis have found thatoral administration of terbinafine is effective for controllingclinical signs, the topical form of terbinafine has rarely beenstudied in dogs and cats. Therefore, this study evaluatedthe efficacy of medical shampoo containing terbinafine hydrochlorideand chlorhexidine gluconate in dogs with dermatophytosis complicated with bacterial infection. Eightdogs infected with Microsporum spp. complicated withbacterial infection were enrolled in this study. These dogswere further blindly divided into Group 1 (no treatment, fourdogs) and group 2 (treated with medical shampoo withterbinafine/chlorhexidine, four dogs). Clinical improvementwas evaluated using bacterial and fungal cultural evaluationcombined with clinical evaluation. This study found thatthe medical shampoo has sufficient efficacy to treat varyingdegrees of dermatophytosis complicated with bacterial infectionin dogs, although the speed of improvement differedaccording to the degree and type of infection. Our study alsofound that combined therapy using antifungal and antibacterialagents can improve clinical signs more effectively andrapidly, suggesting that concurrent bacterial infection playsa significant role in the development of dermatitis.
